YRP Team Jamaica 2008

Information Update Sep 9, 2008

Introduction

Three years ago, York Regional Police established its Adopt a Mission Project in Jamaica. Constable Davis Ahlowalia regularly visited an orphanage in Kingston Jamaica, to assist in caring for the orphans and elderly residents of the Mission. Inspired by his work, York Regional Police adopted an orphanage in Jamaica. On January 6, 2007, Davis was tragically killed in a motor vehicle collision. Our goal is to continue Davis' dream of helping the orphans and seniors of the Mission by raising funds and awareness of their needs.

Last year, York Regional Police collected food and other essentials for the orphanages and shipped a forty-foot container filled with non perishable food items, baby food, diapers, toiletries and household cleaning supplies to the MOP.

In September 2007, a contingent of 17 YRP members including Davis's brother Anil and their mother Anna travelled to the Missionaries of the Poor in Kingston Jamaica where they provided care to the brothers and sisters, worked in the community in areas devastated by hurricanes and distributed food to the people.

This July, 2008, civilians and uniform members of York Regional Police launched an appeal to our community partners and organizations at a Hamper Day event in Markham.

Many prominent Jamaican Canadians, Community members and Associations attended #5 District to promote the cause. Also received from Heinz Products were 57 skids of food.

Once again in August 2008, we were able to assist the orphanages at the Missionaries of the Poor and shipped a forty-foot container filled with non perishable food items, baby food, diapers, toiletries and household cleaning supplies to Jamaica.

Monetary donations were also received and on September 9, 2008, the Richmond Hill Rotary Club donated a cheque for $1000.00 for the Adopt a Mission Project. On October 8, 2008, a fund raising dinner in aid of our adopted orphanage will be held in Marham at the Crystal Fountain Banquet Facility located 60 McDowell Gate in Markham.

This journey to Jamaica is an important mission as York Regional Police undertake to continue Davis Ahlowalia's dream of raising money and supporting the orphanage in Jamaica. To this end, we will be embarking to Jamaica on October 30, 2008, for one week to play an active role in volunteering our services at the missionaries of the Poor.

This trip will be both enjoyable and rewarding not only to the people who are being assisted, but will provide a sense of personal gratification for all who are participating. However, due to the location and the environment in which we will be working, consideration must be taken regarding health and safety.
