Minutes of Richmond Hill Rotary Meeting, March 23

In place of the meeting of March 23, we had RI President Gary Huang come speak to us on March 24 instead.  To see photos, please go our our web site at www.richmondhillrotary.com.  It was also published on my web site, www.truepulse.com

Over 300 Rotarians, politicians, dignitaries and Rotary supporters congregated at the Sheraton Parkway in Richmond Hill to hear Rotary International President Gary Huang speak.  Huang spoke at length about Rotary’s effort to eradicate polio around the world.  But more importantly, he inspired hundreds of people to continue the struggle.

In Richmond Hill, Gary Huang was very pleased to announce that there have been no new cases of polio reported in Africa for the last seven months!  We are hopeful that it may have been eradicated from the continent.

The struggle against polio is focussed on the last major centers in Pakistan and Afghanistan.  Huang admits that “the situation in Pakistan is challenging”.  He challenged those in the room to help eradicate polio from the planet by 2018, the year that Rotary International will hold their worldwide conference in Toronto.

Gary told us about the old Confucius proverb, that “it is better to light just one candle, then sit and curse the dark”.  He challenged each of us to go out and light a candle in the world.  Hence our theme for the year to “Go light up Rotary!”

In place of this meeting, we held our annual Progressive Dinner on March 21, followed by a party at Samir’s house.  We enjoyed an evening a great food and fellowship!  It was also an opportunity for members of the satellite club and our regular club to get to know each other better.  If anyone remembered to take photos, please let me know.  I will post them to our web site.

There is no meeting.on Monday, April 6 because it is Easter Monday.

The next meeting is on Monday, April 13, a fireside, at the London Pub.
