Special Presentation

Ted introduced members of the St. Vincent De Paul Society as well as the Knights of Columbus. They were there to donate a cheque to the Jean Do Fund. Jean and her mom attended. Even though the fund has reached its goal the money will be used for future expenses related to the care of the dog.

A video was shown of John Germ speaking  to Rotarians. He will be Rotary International President from 2016-17.

20plus year Rotary members-the town is looking for info related to the sundial at the town Library. Our Club helped out here and the town is collecting any information available.

Sam of the Markham- Sunrise Club is very sick and has  just had surgery- for members interest.

Pres. Dave T. will be away for the next two meetings and Dr. Abara will assume duties in his absence.

Jason- the Chamber of Commerce is having their AGM meeting Aug. 20. Paul mentioned that in raising our Club’s profile in the community he is looking for 4 members to be there for four hours. Members volunteered.

Classification Talk- Darby Darwin

Has now been working on the Royal Car. Cruise ship “Liberty of the Seas” for 6 years.
Rodney has been in the hotel business all his life. He grew up in England and at an early age got excited about the business as one of his friend’s father owned a hotel. He started working in a lot of hotels in London and landed a job at the Savoy. He worked in every department, as well as the kitchen. He trained in France for two years and became a food and beverage controller. He went back to the Savoy and happened to meet famous people like Charlie Chaplin, Maria Calais, Jimmy Stewart and Pierre Trudeau.

Darby came to Canada on a ski trip and ended up opening a ski hill. He then started specializing in opening hotels worldwide. He worked in Vancouver for 5 years, opened a hotel in Shang-lai and lived in Hong Kong for 5 years. He moved to Indonesia where he ran a number of hotels. He came back to Canada and has worked here for ten years. During the 2008 economic meltdown he took a job in the cruise industry. He joined Rotary in 1982 and has been in 10 different clubs in 7 different countries.

Member Discussion- President Dave- Would the Club be interested in re-engaging with the Terry Fox Run as it is seen as a community event and helps to get our name out there?

After considerable discussion from a number of members a vote was taken. The majority voted against re-engaging with the Terry Fox Run.
