Special Speaker- Ori Abara

Graham introduced the special speaker. Ori is the daughter of Dr. Abara and was chosen as a RYLA candidate for 2014. She wanted to share some of her experiences at the leadership camp.

Ori is going into her last year at university in the study of Urban Planning and was grateful for the opportunity to go to Belleville for RYLA. The RYLA program started after a Rotary event in Queensland in 1959 for Princess Alexandria. Rotarians were so impressed by the youth at the event that they wanted a leadership program to continue.
The goal of RYLA was to “train youth aged 14-30 in character, leadership and personality development.” To also encourage leadership training.

Ori mentioned that at the camp they-learned things about themselves, learned to communicate more effectively with the goal of hard work. They also looked at one’s Growth Zone-to help stretch ones’ personal and professional growth while learning new
skills. They were given a chance to speak to their leaders informally as well.
They realized that different leaders can have different profiles and still be great. Her favourite activity at the end of the week was to work on the Trenton Community Garden as part of a service activity. She enjoyed the week and would recommend this opportunity to others. There is an application process to attend.
.
Rick S. thanked her for her professional presentation. It was a learning experience for members of the Club.
