Tree Planting in the Oak Ridges Moraine

More than 300 students from nine York Region schools will work at the fourth annual Rotary/TD Friends of the Environment tree planting in the Oak Ridges Moraine Corridor Park. This year's planting will take place Thursday, May 3, between 9 am and 2.30 pm. The neighbourly public is invited to visit or even help plant. This year will take the number of native trees and shrubs planted to over 5,000.

The plantings were started by the Richmond Hill Rotary Club's Bill Harris in 2009. This year's trees are sponsored by the TD Bank Friends of the Environment Foundation, the Richmond Hill Garden and Horticulture Society and Richmond Hill Rotary Club.

High Schools include Aurora High School, St. Theresa of Lisieux Catholic High School, Jean Vanier Catholic High School. Grade 5 and 6 students from Public schools include nearby Bond Lake PS, Kettle Lakes PS, Windham Ridge PS, Our Lady Help of Christians Public School, Our Lady of the Annunciation Catholic Public School, and St. Mary Immaculate Catholic Public School. The Toronto Waldorf School will send 40 students this year.

The plantings are part of the park management by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority who are important supporters of the multiple-year project. Richmond Hill's Urban Forestry supports the project with ample piles of wood chip mulch.

The Conservation Authority is supporting the planting with preparation of the site, and the spectacular Raptor show of hawks, owls and eagles during the lunch break. The planting will take place on Thursday, May 3, 2012. Planting training for the high school students starts at 10 am. The full planting with all the students starts at 12.30 pm and ends by 2.30 pm. The planting will take place at Old Colony Road, just east of Bond Lake Public School, in Oak Ridges.

The Oak Ridges Moraine Corridor Park is the name for the 1200 acres set aside by the Government of Ontario in 2006 to protect the Oak Ridges Moraine and the kettle lakes in Richmond Hill.
